Myths about cats
Black cats
Black cats have a long history of bringing good luck. Yes, that is good luck, not the bad luck they have become associated with in Western culture. Ancient Egyptians worshipped black cats and believed they were sacred. Seventeenth century English King, Charles I, loved his black cat so much he assigned guards to protect it night and day. When the pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, they brought more than just the American Thanksgiving with them; they also brought the superstition that black cats were witches’ familiars.
The idea that black cats bring bad luck is still known today, although how widely believed is unknown. Black cats are often overlooked in shelters for flashier looking cats. Perhaps, also, the negative superstitions about black cats are still mildly active. However, exploring bathtubs, lounging on window sills and flopping on the ground for belly rubs, do not seem scary or evil in the slightest.
While some people may still avoid walking under ladders and insist on tossing salt over their shoulders, adopting a black cat should always be seen as a good idea. Maybe you will come into a little bit of luck; you never know.
Cleaning themselves
Cats have very prickly tongues and are known for their grooming and some people believe that because cats clean themselves, there is no need for human intervention. However, cats need some help keeping their fur beautiful and gleaming.
While cats do clean themselves with their tongue, they can’t reach everywhere. Even if they could, cats shed fur which needs to be brushed away. Try to brush your cat at least once a week to prevent a build up of dead fur that clings on your hand when you pet him. If you cat hates brushes and bites and kicks to avoid you, try a rubber brush that acts as a message, some cats love these.
You can also buy cleaning clothes at pet stores, which are good to freshen your cat’s fur and remove any remaining dead hair. Sometimes one or two wipes down his back is all you can manage, but it is better than nothing.
Treats are a great way to reward kitty for being brushed and cleaned.
Milk
Milk, although given to all cats in old TV shows and they seem to love it, is not good for your cat. The lactose in milk can not be digested properly, which leads to an upset stomach. Too much milk can also cause diarrhea, which can be deadly to kittens.
Pet stores carry kitten milk, which is not made from cow’s milk and is much better for your cat. Temptations cat treats makes dairy flavoured treats, which cats tend to love.
